On our way from Thailand to Laos, we knew we wanted to make a stop in the small city of Luang Prabang. We heard wonderful things, but still, we planned just two days. Those two days turned into four very quickly. I guess you could say our unique Luang Prabang accommodation at the Namkhan Ecolodge had a big influence in this. This is one place I would recommend you adding to your “where to stay in Luang Prabang” lists.

Unique accommodations gives you such a different experience when traveling, or just getting away in general. I’ve been finding myself drawn to them more and more. When I saw this ecolodge, it wasn’t just the aspect of how they are focusing on environmental friendly living. It was also how they were bringing that unique feel to their remote location.

About Namkhan Ecolodge

The explorer tent at Namkhan Ecolodge in Luang Prabang accommodation

Starting as a farm, the owner wanted to expand to share more of this beautiful land he has with the world. They decided to quickly expand it into an ecolodge, including a higher end unique accommodation experience. They’ve created several eco friendly facilities for their guests including farm to table restaurants, yoga and meditation pavilion, an outdoor gym, swimming pool and more. They’ve thought of absolutely everything to make sure their guests have plenty to do during their stay. But most of all, relaxation is key while staying here at Namkhan Ecolodge.

Their unique accommodations include different glamping tents, beautiful suites and bungalows and a charming farm room. They range in price and have a little bit of adventure for everyone.

The location of Namkhan Ecolodge

About an hour walk from the city center, and a 15 minute drive, the Ecolodge isn’t a walk out the door to get to the street market. However, it’s in a quiet remote area right along the river. If you enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle of the Asian cities, this is perfect for you.

Don’t let the location scare you either! They provide you free shuttle transportation in and out of the city multiple times a day at specific times. We had absolutely no problem enjoying our peace and quiet at the Ecolodge AND exploring the city as well.

How are they Eco-Friendly?

Namkhan Ecolodge prides itself for their eco-friendly experience. There are several ways they are working to promote this way of living to those who stay here.

  • Laundry services: While more expensive than what you may see in the city center, they use eco-friendly, all natural ingredients for your clothing. It’s better for your skin and the environment.
  • Furniture: All the furniture that you see in your rooms, the cafe and reception areas are all made by their own carpentry and workers training from the local village.
  • Food: The Ecolodge started as an organic farm. Most of the food is created right on location. They do not use any fertilizer to keep it as clean and organic as possible.
  • Supporting the local people: Wandering the grounds of the Ecolodge, you will see tons of workers of all sorts. They are providing several jobs to the local people.

Their facilities and offerings

A unique stay at the Namkhan Ecolodge in Luang Prabang Accommodation on the river.

As I mentioned, the Ecolodge includes several offerings to keep you busy days at a a time. There was so much to do that you can book directly there and not even have to leave the site!

  • Yoga / Meditation: They hire outside yoga instructors to put on yoga and meditation classes morning and evenings at a small cost. They plan to do yoga retreats in the future as well. I’d love to come back for one of those!
  • Cooking classes / BBQ: Learn from a local Laos chef on how to cook.
  • Spa: You can book a wonderful outdoor massage for WAY less than what you’re used to in the states. It is so peaceful.
  • Horse riding: The farm has horses to have a horseback riding experience. This would be a great option if you are traveling with your children.
  • Tubing down the river: The Ecolodge lies right along the river. You can swim, relax or float on the tubes they provide.
  • Airport transportation: If you book directly on their website, they also offer you airport transportation. That’s an amazing cost savings!

The Explorer Tent

We stayed in the Explorer Tent, which I thought was one of the coolest experiences sleeping “outside” we’ve ever had. The tent has everything you need including a comfortable bed, nice lighting, a fan, a desk and even soft robes. It is right alongside the river for a beautiful view and peaceful sounds throughout the day and night. There is a separate bamboo building for your very own bathroom. Definitely the most amazing jungle feeling bathroom I’ve ever stayed in! This glamping experience was a Luang Prabang accommodation that I never expected to have.

I would highly recommend booking your vacation in Luang Prabang accommodation with Namkhan Ecolodge. It gives you a unique experience in one of the most charming cities in a hidden gem country. What more could you ask for?!
