When it comes to European cities, I recommend to put Prague at the top of that list. This unique city has an enormous amount of history and beautiful architecture to compliment it.
While the old town is the popular tourist destination, Prague has a variety of neighborhoods to explore. A weekend trip is doable, but you could spend at least a week of your vacation days wandering through the city.
I had two days in Prague, and I felt I fit in a good amount into a short time. Here are the 8 things I believe you have to fit into your time in Prague.
Take a look at what to know before heading to Prague to help you plan.
Look up local events
Not just in Prague, but anywhere you go. You can easily do this through facebook, or googling what’s going on in the area when you are there. This is a great way to embrace the culture and environment you are in. When I was in Prague, there was a wine and food festival. A friend and I went and we were the only non locals there, and that’s how we liked it.
Eat incredible pancakes and waffles
I’m a big breakfast person, but you can really mess up a pancake or waffle. I don’t care what anyone says! Not in Prague though, they know their breakfast necessities. They even had free real maple syrup each place I went, which if you know me, is a huge added bonus in my eyes. Two places I went that I would recommend are Waf-Waf and Den Noc.
Explore the city at sunrise
My new favorite way to travel is exploring at sunrise. Usually the only people who will be out during this time are people who are stumbling back from the bar or photographers. Exploring a city early in the morning allows you to see it in a different light. You are shoving your way through the crowds, the lighting is perfect, and you feel so accomplished before the day has really begun. In Prague we made it all the way up to the Castle and we were the only people there. Usually this Castle is packed with tourists, but at 6:30am it’s not.
Get a city view from the castle
The Prague Castle is stunning, like any castle or church in Europe. They were built centuries before we were even born. The details and design that was put into it is fascinating. From the top, there is also a magical view of the city that you can sit and take in.
Walk across the Charles Bridge
This is one thing that I highly recommend you do at sunrise. By about 8:30am, the bridge will be packed until the sun goes down. The bridge itself has several view points on it and it’s a Prague bucket list item you have to check off.
Go out to a local pub, in a cave
When I travel, I’m not much of a going out person. However, in Prague, you must go out for a drink at one of the local pubs. Some pubs have cave like atmospheres in their basements. This blog has a list of bars with the coolest vibes. Check it out!
Wander without a map
Even with little time, pick a destination, and wander around that area. When we went to Waf-Waf, we noticed that there were several coffee shops and parks around it. In old town, we also wandered without a map and decided left or right in the moment. Take a chance on having no plan and seeing where you end up – usually it makes the best memories.
Grab the local ice cream
Prague has a famous type of ice cream that is called Trdelnik. It is a donut style cone with scrumptious ice cream inside. You can get them basically anywhere in the city. If you head into old town, there are several stands serving them with a variety of ice cream flavors.
